What is the Citizenship Test?
The United States Citizenship Test (also
called "civics exam") is a
required step in the Naturalization process. Most applicants for
United States citizenship are required to pass the Citizenship
Test. There are a few exceptions, however, most individuals
applying for citizenship are required to pass the civics and
English language tests.
The New U.S. Citizenship Test: The USCIS has recently
redesigned the citizenship test. The 100 questions chosen for
the civics part of the test are meant to help new citizens gain
knowledge in key areas of the American history and society. The
questions are designed to help applicants integrate into the
American society. Basic knowledge of English reading, speaking
and writing are important elements that any new U.S. citizens
should master in order to become citizens of a new country.
Making an effort to learn the principles of a new country will
also tell the Adjudication Officer about the applicant’s moral
character.
Citizenship Interview: An in-person
interview is required for most applicants. During your
interview, we will ask you to verbally answer a set of civics
questions and to show proficiency in the English language.
